This really depends on the same factors that have caused the discolouration in the first place (e.g surface stains caused by tea/coffee, smoking, poor oral hygiene and age).
Whilst whitening is generally considered to be a safe procedure, your dentist, before and after whitening, needs to assess your dentition to ensure you are a candidate. These things include receding gums, existing sensitivity and existing restorations on front teeth (these will not whiten). Also some discolourations will whiten better than others – For example yellow-ish hued teeth will probably bleach well, brownish-coloured teeth may bleach less well, and grayish-hued teeth may not bleach well at all.
